AMD goes 65nm
AMD, has started shipping chips based in the 65-nanometer process. It is believed
that these chips will be about 30 percent less power hungry as compared to those
created using 90 nanometer process.
Credit for improvements is due to the fact that AMD has started using silicon
germanium film. The use of germanium helps electrical carriers to move more
rapidly, thus consuming lesser power and giving faster output.
AMD has also plans to start the manufacturing chips soon based on the 45-nanometer
process soon in 18 months time. The 65-nanometer process based
chips may become a big, if not instant success with the enterprises for the
major reason of its reduced power consumption.
