PowerDsine Midspan Family

The IEEE 802.3af standard compliant 6500, 8000 and 3000 Power over Ethernet (PoE) products are meant to upgrade a network to PoE without having to replace existing Ethernet switches. PowerDsine’s PoE products claim to offer advantages like the capability to use a single Cat 5 cable for both data and power. This should eliminate the need for a separate wire to power devices.

The product is claimed to allow IP telephones, wireless LAN access points, security network cameras and other types of data terminals to receive power, along with Data over standard Ethernet cables. This leaves the network infrastructure unaltered since PoE offers data and power to flow safely over a single LAN cable with no interference.

HP Laserjet 5200 series

HP has launched the Laserjet 5200 series. This is an advanced version of the erstwhile 5100 printers. The launch will address the needs of the corporate environment.

The product is claimed to be based on the HP Instant-On Technology that reduces the warm-up time. It is claimed to allow the first page to be printed in 10 seconds regardless of when the printer was last used. It offers print quality of up to 1200 x 1200 dpi and uses monochrome printing technology. The connectivity options include Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port, IEEE-1284 parallel port, and one open EIO slot.

Nortel Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5100 is a network-based, SIP application delivery solution that integrates IP telephony, multi-media conferencing, instant messaging, and other collaboration tools such as conferencing, white boarding, file exchange, co-Web browsing personalisation, call screening, call logs, and call management. IP telephony uses picture caller ID to manage incoming calls. It provides check call logs for missed calls.

IBM System Storage DS8000 Turbo

IBM has introduced the System Storage DS8000 Turbo storage range. The DS8100 Turbo and DS8300 Turbo systems are based on Power5+ processors.

These systems claim to offer a performance improvement of up to 15 percent for transaction processing workload environments, as compared to the IBM System Storage DS8000 storage system that they supersede. 4 Gbps fibre channel and FICON support have been added. Additional features of the DS8000 Turbo models include tiered storage options, functions to enable greater performance and efficiency for DB2 applications on IBM system p servers, and support for three-site business continuity solutions.

CMIE Prowess 2.6 version

The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) has launched Prowess version 2.6 which it claims offers many content enhancements, especially those relating to stock markets. The new version includes Equity Holding Pattern reportage that includes modifications introduced by SEBI and BSE.

Shares traded in a scrip can be squared off (bought and sold) in a day or investors can take delivery. In the current version, the turnover report shows the shares transacted of a company on a trading day. In the new version (2.6), the report on turnover is claimed to provide the shares delivered daily along with the daily transactions in a company’s stock. Prowess installations contain BSE stock price data from 1990 onwards. There will be no full stock version. CMIE will not charge additional amount from users.

Trend Micro’s InterScan Gateway Security Appliance is targeted at mid-sized organisations. It includes anti-bot functionality.

The appliance incorporates anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam, content-filtering and URL-filtering. The appliance is meant to be deployed behind an organisation’s existing firewall or VPN solution. Hence it claims to add an additional layer to their Internet gateway security.

The product is available in six models—IGSA 100, 200, 300, 600, 800, and 1000.

Epson V100 photo scanner

Epson has launched V100 photo scanner for quality film scanning. The product scans and restores documents, 35 mm film and photographs. The output will be of 3,200 dpi optical resolution with a 48-bit colour depth.

The scanner’s lid can be opened up to 180 degrees to scan thick documents including books, magazines, and even 3D objects. The product comes with four direct access buttons located on the scanner’s front panel. These buttons provide quick access to the scanner’s most common functions including start, copy, scan to PDF and scan to e-mail. It also features an energy-saving mode that is automatically activated after 15 minutes of inactivity.

SMC Networks TigerStack

SMC has launched the TigerStack 1000 Stackable 10/100/1000 48-Port managed switch (SMC8848M) and 24-Port stackable managed switch (SMC8824M). Both switches are available with an optional 10G uplink.

The switches support both IPv4 and IPv6. They are stackable up to 8-high and can provide up to 384 ports of high-bandwidth connectivity per stack to handle high-bandwidth applications at speeds reaching up to 176 Gbps with a non-blocking switching architecture.

The switches also support VLANs based on frame tags, ports or protocol, automatic (GARP VLAN Registration Protocol Local Area Network) GVRP LAN registration; and multiple spanning tree. ATEN KL1116 16-Port ‘Hideaway’ LCD KVM Switch

Aten has introduced a KL1116 Hideaway LCD KVM switch. It incorporates a 16-port KVM switch in a Hideaway console with 17’’ high-resolution LCD monitor, keyboard and touchpad. It takes less than 1U of rack space.

It is a dual-slide design. The console slides back while the LCD panel remains in plain sight to monitor and troubleshoot servers. It claims to control up to 31 additional compatible KVM switches, and up to 512 servers through daisy-chaining. It also offers dual console management. In addition to the integrated KVM console, a PS/2 console can be added easily via the rear ports that allow two users to manage any server on the KVM installation.

Dell has launched its new Precision 390 Workstation with custom-built configurations that include Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors.

It is aimed at enterprise requirements from 3-D entertainment to 3-D engineering design and targeted at CAD, architectural engineering and digital content creation users. It claims to have an improved chassis for flexibility in deployment or redeployment. The product has large front bezel vents and a real-time thermal sensor to improve airflow and better manage system thermals. The sensor also claims to help improve fan efficiency for an average 20 percent improvement in idle acoustics.

Panasonic Toughbooks

Panasonic has recently launched its Toughbook range of mobile computers. All models of Toughbook are now available in India which includes the rugged CF-18 and CF-29, the semi-rugged CF-73, and the ultra-portable CF-W2, CF-Y2 and CF-T2. These are made as per MIL-standards set down by the US Department of Defence and claimed to be the only laptop brand where all models are conceived, designed, manufactured and tested in-house.

A proprietary Magnesium alloy casing is claimed to be 20 times stronger than ABS plastic and five times stronger than Titanium.
