The use of IT in media has come a long way ever since the
early days of computerisation in India. Shekhar Gupta, Editor-in-Chief and Group
CEO, Indian Express Group, reminisced at Technology Senate 2005 about his early
days in the industry. He narrated his experiences from the days in which he
covered military conflicts in various parts of the world, and how difficult
it was to report at that time. He remembered the day the first computer was
installed in his office, and how it was called the apple of everybodys
eyepartly because it was an Apple machine.
Media Can Leverage IT
At his anecdotal best, Shekhar narrated various incidents from his career when
technology proved vital; he also spoke about how media can leverage IT to generate
quality coverage. IT has today become indispensable to any media organisation,
he said, and it has immensely simplified the processes of news gathering and
presentation.

He pointed out how IT is being applied in broadcast media
to transmit news at a pace thats faster than light. As a journalist
who has seen the changing face of the Indian media and has very wide experiences,
Gupta delighted the audience with his insightful presentation.
Making Life Easier
He expressed delight at the fantastic response that was generated by the event,
and told the CIOs that he as a common user relies on the technology leaders
(CIOs) to bring about innovation to make life easier for the common user. He
appreciated the platform that Technology Senate provides to industry leaders
to share their experiences and knowledge with a critical mass of people.
