Do we need an ISP licence?
We are a small VoIP company based in the US and looking to do business in India.
We are planning to start an office or a subsidiary in India, and are in the
process of getting the required licences and permits.
We are confused, however, as we are getting mixed messages from various sources
as to whether we need an ISP licence to get the permit. As you may already know,
VoIP service providers do not necessarily need to provide Internet access to
customers, but need to connect to the Internet with the help of an ISP. Do we
still need an ISP licence to get the VoIP permit? Any insight from you will
be appreciated.

Dear Dipak Chudasama,
Thank you for writing to us. I had forwarded your query to Rajiv Gerela, who
is General Manager, Technology at Wipro BPO, one India's leading BPO organisations.
This is his reply:
The requirement of approvals will depend on the kind of business services you
want to offer. VoIP on a private leased circuit is allowed for corporates even
within India and so there should not be much of a problem.
You will at most need network connectivity approval, which is not very difficult
to get at all. I request you to specify your business needs so I could then
give you more specific information.

A lucky winner
I attended Technology Senate last year and was given an air ticket to travel
from Chennai to Colombo by Jet Airways. During the trip I had filled up a contest
form that was provided by the airlines. I recently received a call from Jet
that I am the lucky winner of two tickets for a Mumbai-London-Mumbai or Mumbai-Singapore-Mumbai
trip.
I am thankful to you all at Network Magazine for providing me an opportunity
to travel on the airline-and making the trip extra memorable for me.
