IP SAN

Intransa IP7500

The Intransa IP7500 is the first offering from Intransa that is built upon its IntraStor modular storage architecture with StorControl software.

Designed from the ground up to leverage a company's existing Ethernet infrastructure, the IP7500 combines TCP/IP and standard ATA disk drives to provide an alternative to Fibre Channel for some applications. The IP7500 is a pre-configured full-rack system, with 24 TB of capacity, a UPS, preloaded software, a management station, and headroom for expansion. It accepts 20 redundant Gigabit Ethernet connections (40 without redundancy).

StorControl software is used to consolidate storage resources into a virtualised pool, ensuring continuous data availability and protection.

The IP7500 delivers N-way active-active failover with redundant front-end and back-end switching that eliminates single points of failure. The IP7500 comes with 24 TB and is expandable to 32 TB in the same rack with the addition of modular building-block disk enclosures. The fully-integrated solution also forms the rack-level building block for large-scale enterprise IP SAN deployments with hundreds of terabytes.

The Intransa IP7500 is targeted at business-critical online applications—digital media, video surveillance, data warehousing or mining, and near-line storage.

Database

Oracle 10g Release 2

Oracle has released a new version of its flagship database. 10g Release 2 adds new sorting techniques such as index creation to improve the performance of sorting operations, and it may well eliminate the need for pre-load sort operations. The improved load balancing in Oracle Real Application Clusters enables rapid response to changing server utilisation patterns across a cluster.

Oracle has also advanced its availability competencies. The new release features an open Application Programme Interface (API) for Oracle's clusterware-Cluster Ready Services-that will facilitate higher application availability. New backup and recovery capabilities in 10g Release 2 enhance existing backup-to-disk operations by automating the tape backup process, reducing the need for complex backup environments. Its automated fail-over capabilities improve a site's ability to resume online services rapidly after a disaster, even in unattended environments.

10g Release 2 builds upon the manageability features of its predecessor. The new release is said to feature improved Automatic Storage Management (ASM) with enhanced storage virtualisation. Among other things, ASM simplifies the optimal configuration and management of database storage in an enterprise grid environment.

10g Release 2 allows for greater awareness of overall system performance by means of the Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor. The Automatic Workload Repository generates comparison reports that provide a mechanism for quick troubleshooting of performance bottlenecks.
