Sun Fire B100x
The newest addition
to Sun's low-cost x86 line-up is the Sun Fire B100x. This is a single processor,
x86 blade server using AMD's Mobile Athlon XP 1800 processor.
The Sun Fire B100x is part of the Sun Fire B1600 BladePlatform which is
claimed to be the industry's first multi-architecture blade platform. Sun also
plans to deliver high performance x86 server solutions with its Sun Fire V65x
and V60x systems, utilizing new 3.2 GHz Xeon processors. Sun says that it will
continue to grow its low-cost portfolio starting in early 2004 with new AMD
Opteron processor-based systems.

NAS Filers
DataNAS LE
The DataNAS LE from Plexus Infocomm Networks uses 4100 technology
and is available in 120 GB or 1 TB configurations. The filer capacities are
dynamically scalable using RAID 5.
The filer uses hot-swappable IDE drives with an intelligent disk backplane.
RAID 5 expansion is supported by the filer. Networks supported by the DataNAS
LE are Windows NT Domain, 2000 Active Directory, Unix/Linux and Macintosh. Plexus
claims that the NAS filers have an easy to use Web interface, along with features
like NAS-to-NAS file replication, local or remote tape backup or DVD-RW backup,
and native Windows file security. The models are available in 5-bay tower or
1U rack form factors.

Proliant ML 150
HP
India has launched their ProLiant ML150 server based on Intel Xeon processor.
The ML150 can scale up to two Intel Xeon processors, up to 12 GB of memory and
730 GB of storage capacity with hot pluggable hard disk drives.
The server claims to allow for tool free replacement of major components to
minimize downtime and maintenance costs. The ML150 server is certified for Microsoft
Windows Server 2003 and Linux Operating Systems.
HP Systems Insight Manager, a platform management tool was
also launched with the ML 150. This tool is claimed to employ a modular architectureenabling
client, storage, printer, and power management in addition to server deployment,
performance and workload management from a single console.
HP Systems Insight Manager provides common fault, configuration, and asset management
services. It is targeted at enterprises ranging in size from small-to-medium
businesses up to large enterprises. HP Systems Insight Manager is able to manage
either homogeneous or heterogeneous server environments with multiple operating
systems and, a variety of devices from HP and other vendors.

Enterprise Serial ATA Drive
WD Raptor
Western Digital
offers their WD 740GD Serial ATA drive. This 74 GB, 10,000 RPM hard drive is
claimed to match SCSI reliability and performance while providing simplified
connectivity at lesser costs.
The Raptor has a buffer size of 8 MB and an average latency of 2.99 ms. Average
seek times for the drive are a read seek time of 4.5 ms and write seek time
of 5.9 ms. Transfer rates are in the ranger of 1,200 Mbits/s for buffer to host
(Serial ATA) and buffer to disk of 816 Mbits/s.

Storage Management
Storage Foundation 4.0
Veritas Software Corporation offers their Veritas Storage Foundation 4.0 for
Windows. This storage management and virtualization software integrates with
Microsoft platforms to manage storage in windows environments.
An option to Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows, Veritas FlashSnap is a software-based
snapshot solution that uses Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), a Windows
Server 2003-based technology that enables Microsoft-supported snapshots of Microsoft
Exchange Server 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for quick-recovery backups
and restores. Veritas FlashSnap also provides off-host processing for testing,
data analysis and reporting.
Veritas Storage Foundation 4.0 for Windows also includes:
- Integration with Microsoft's storage technologies: Volume Shadow Copy Service
(VSS), Virtual Disk Service (VDS) and Automated System Recovery (ASR).
- Dynamic Multipathing support for eleven new storage array families, including
storage area network (SAN)-based failover and load balancing capabilities
for existing and new storage arrays.
- High availability through Dynamic Relayout, which delivers automated online
reconfiguration capabilities.
- Simplified management with Storage Foundation Assistant.
Veritas states that their customers can license and deploy as much of the Veritas
Storage Foundation for Windows software as they need, with one CD that includes
advanced volume management technology as well as Veritas FlashSnap, Dynamic Multipathing
and an option for MSCS support.
Veritas Storage Foundation 4.0 for Windows is available at
a starting price of US$695 for the Server/Standard Edition.
