UPS
Back-UPS RS
American Power Conversion (APC) has launched an expansion of its Back-UPS family
of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). APC claims that the Back-UPS RS 1000VA
IN and 1500VA IN units offer more outlets, Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR),
and a longer backup time in a small, versatile footprint, giving users enough
power protection.
The new models
offer five outlets, four for surge protection and battery backup, and one for
surge protection for non-data peripherals such as printers and scanners. Four
of the five high-powered outlets can accommodate transformer block shaped plugs
to maximize outlet use.
The Back-UPS RS was designed in a compact, tower form factor and offers mounting
for either floor standing or as a (2U) shelf mount. The UPS offers user replaceable
batteries and incorporates an intelligent battery management system that is
claimed to maximize battery performance and reliability.
APC claims that the Back-UPS RS 1000 IN unit will supply up to 90 minutes of
backup time for a typical computer system and the Back-UPS RS 1500 IN will supply
up to 120 minutes of backup time. Additionally, the Back-UPS RS 1500 IN unit
can extend its backup time to 360 minutes with a purchase of an extra battery
pack.
The Back-UPS RS 1000 IN and 1500 IN come with a two-year comprehensive warranty
(covering UPS and battery). The Back UPS RS 1000 IN and RS 1500 IN are available
at an M.R.P of Rs 12,750 and Rs 16,600 respectively.

VPN SOLUTIONs
Cisco Easy VPN
Cisco Systems has launched new Virtual Private Network (VPN) solutions. The
Cisco Easy VPN solution is a software enhancement for existing Cisco routers
and security appliances. This solution is meant for mobile users, remote offices
with little IT support, or large CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) deployments,
where it is impractical to individually configure multiple remote devices. Cisco
claims the Easy VPN feature simplifies VPN configuration and can help companies
reduce costs as the need for local IT support is minimized.
These VPN devices when used in branch/remote offices, can receive predefined
security policies and configuration parameters from the headquarters' VPN head-end.
This is claimed to minimize the VPN configuration required at the remote location.
Parameters such as internal IP addresses, internal subnet masks, DHCP server
addresses, WINS server addresses, and split-tunneling flags are all pushed to
the remote device.
Cisco's range of VPN solutions can be split up into the following:
- Cisco Easy VPN: A software enhancement for existing Cisco routers and security
appliances targeted at VPN deployments for remote offices and teleworkers.
It is claimed that these VPNs do not need human intervention, and can be deployed
centrally.
- Site-to-Site VPNs: An alternative WAN infrastructure to connect branch
offices, home offices, or business partner sites to all, or portions of a
company's network.
- Remote Access: This is a remote access VPN for mobile workers, telecommuters
and day extenders.

FABRIC ATTACHED STORAGE
NetApp FAS systems
Network Appliance's FAS (fabric-attached storage) systems are targeted at entry-level
and distributed enterprise needs. The new models in this range are the FAS250,
FAS270, and FAS270c (clustered).
The FAS250 and FAS270 are targeted at entry-level enterprise storage for use
in workgroup, department, and distributed enterprise applications. NetApp claims
that these systems are the industry's first unified (SAN/NAS) storage appliances
for the entry-level and are available immediately.
The FAS250 is
designed for NAS and/or iSCSI SAN environments with support for iSCSI, CIFS,
NFS, and HTTP protocols. Within the FAS250 shrunken head, the system has support
for up to 1TB via 36-, 72-, or 144 GB Fiber Channel drives.
The FAS270 is targeted at NAS and/or Fiber Channel/iSCSI SAN environments. It
offers up to 4 TB capacity, as well as optional high availability (clustering)
in a single box.
The FAS200 series utilizes Broadcom's SB1250 MIPS processor, which features
dual 650 MHz cores, and comes with two onboard 10/100/1000 copper NICs, a copper
Fiber Channel tape port, and a serial port. The MIPS architecture and low power
dissipation enables NetApp to create a 'shrunken head' FAS system that fits
into a very small package, requiring no additional power or cooling beyond what
is used by the disk shelf unit. The systems come in a 3U form factor in either
a rack or tower configuration.
The FAS200 series can support up to 48TB of storage via a head (or controller)
swap. NetApp claims that the FAS200 family can be upgraded in place without
a fork lift upgrade or data migration, providing complete investment protection.
The range starts at a price point of around US$10,000.
