Printers and multi-up printing
Dear Anil Patrick R,
I am a regular reader of Network Magazine. I like the
magazine very much because it explains various IT concepts in such a way, that
even a person without a technical background can comprehend. Keep up the good
work.
Your articles on network printers titled 'Printing
in the Enterprise,' which appeared in the 'Tech Update' section of the September
2003 issue were very interesting and informative. I have a few queries on the
topic.
What is multi-up printing? How can a printer be configured
to go into a power-saving mode after a certain amount of idle time? I could
not find these options in my printer settings. I use an HP Laserjet 6 L Gold.

Prashant Lokhande
Dear Prashant Lokhande,
Thank you very much for your kind words of appreciation
and encouragement. Here are my responses to your queries.
Multi-up printing is basically the means of fitting
more than one page's content into a single print-out page. Suppose you want
to take a print-out of a Web page, which is rather long, and runs into many
pages, you can use the multi-up printing utility. For example, this will fit
four pages or more into a single page.
Some advantages are reduction in the use of paper,
less printer wear and tear, and less use of the ink.

In your HP Laserjet 6L Gold, the power saver mode
is the 'sleep mode' which you will find in the printer menu. Basically, the
printer will go into a standby kind of mode after a certain period of inactivity.
If you have the instruction manual at hand, flipping
through it may produce a number of functionalities you were perhaps unaware
of.
More warehouses please
Dear Brian and Soutiman,
Your articles in Network Magazine are very good.
I read the article titled 'A warehouse of value' in
the October 2002 issue of Network Magazine. It talked about the data warehouse
initiative at Godrej Consumer Products Limited and was very interesting and
informative.
My company is in the process of implementing a data
warehouse. Do you have any other case studies on the same lines, which can help
educate me and my team on the various facets of implementation?
Waiting for a positive response from your side.
