Cisco
aims to diversify in the areas of WLAN, Content Delivery
Networking (CDN), security and VoIP. Bill Chang Regional
Managing Director, ASEAN, Cisco Systems, said that the
company will approach these four areas by building hardware
that has room to take up these new technologies when
companies and ISPs require them.
Chang said one way of doing this is through a 'blade'
architecture, where wireless gateways or firewalls can
be inserted into existing equipment as they are needed.
He added that the company wants to diversify its product
focus so that it will not get caught when any market
segment under-performs. "If you look at many of
our competitors like Lucent and Juniper who are focused
solely on the service provider business, they are affected
when this segment suffered in the last two years,"
he said.
On another front, the company has also been making forays
into storage networking. However, Chang said that this
is a secondary focus compared to the above four immediate
ones. For storage, he said that Cisco will focus on
building 'storage network routers', which are essentially
hardware devices that bridge storage protocols like
fiber channel and networking protocols like IP. These
devices will allow enterprises to extend its storage
networks from local to WANs using IP. However, given
that storage networking is an extremely lucrative market,
it may not be long before this segment becomes Cisco's
top priority.
