Applications
For Your Linux Box
The
number of application being developed for Linux is growing
rapidly. With established software players like Oracle,
IBM, Informix, Inprise (Borland), etc, announcing support
for Linux—some are already porting existing applications
to Linux—this free OS is gaining in strength.
Covering the entire gamut of Linux applications is beyond
the scope of this feature. What we have done is provide
an overview of some of the popular Linux applications, right
form Web servers to RDBMS, to server security solutions.
Web
Servers
Apache Web Server
Apache is the most popular Web server available on Linux.
The reasons are quite obvious: Apache is stable, easy to
configure, and works like a charm. Also, it's free. Most
Linux distributions come bundled with Apache binaries (including
Caldera eServer that is available on the Network Magazine
CD).
NCSA Web Server
NCSA Web server is available for Linux in both complied
and source code form. Using the complied version is much
easier, you don't have to configure and compile the source
code for Linux. NCSA's Web server is fast and quite small,
can run as a standalone daemon and provide pretty good security.
Relational Database (RDBMS) servers
IBM DB2 Universal Database
DB2 Universal Database(TM) is the industry's first multimedia,
Web-ready relational database management system, strong
enough to meet the demands of large corporations and flexible
enough to serve medium-sized and small businesses. It provides
centralized client configuration, high data availability,
security and performance monitoring.
Ovrimos SQL Server
Ovrimos is an easy to use transactional RDBMS, which
combines the functionality of a Web server and a SQL server.
It is based on the client/server architecture and demands
very few resources. In addition, Ovrimos is a programmable
Web server and has a new HTML front-end, making it easy
to administer (you can configure it remotely for use with
any standard Web browser).
Oracle 8i
Oracle8i Enterprise Edition is a powerful RDBMS server
available for driving enterprise e-business applications,
on-line transaction processing applications (OLTP), query-intensive
data warehouses, and data intensive Web sites. Oracle8i
Enterprise Edition offers unparalleled performance and scalability
that spans from single CPU servers through massive server
clusters and mainframes. The version also has native support
for XML and Java making it a complete e-business solution.
Mail Servers
CommuniGate
Pro
CommuniGate Pro is a high-end, industry strength Internet
mail server. It supports most major operating systems including
Solaris, FreeBSD, Linux/LinuxPPC, Windows NT, Mac OS X,
BSD, Cobalt, AIX, UnixWare, D/Unix, AS/400, HP/UX, and IRIX.
The CommuniGate Pro server takes full advantage of modern
multi-threaded and multi-processor environments, and includes
spam protection, administration via Web, extensive multi-domain
support, dialup capabilities, cluster support, and unique
IMAP multi- mailbox features.
Courier
Courier is an integrated ESMTP, IMAP, POP3, and Web
mail server, designed to provide mail services with aggressive
spam filtering. A mail filtering API defines site-wide and
recipient-specific mail filters that are applied during
mail transport, instead of only after the unwanted mail
has already been received. Courier also includes a UUCP
gateway, and a mailing list manager.

Software
WebTrends Security Analyzer
WebTrends Security Analyzer helps discover and fix security
vulnerabilities on your Internet, intranet and extranet
systems. Systems are analyzed on demand or at scheduled
intervals, allowing prioritization and comparative reports
to be generated with recommended fixes that resolve possible
security breaches. The built-in AutoSync technology seamlessly
updates WebTrends Security Analyzer with latest security
tests for most current vulnerability analysis available.
Astaro Security Linux
Astaro Security Linux offers extensive protection for
local networks against hackers, viruses and other risks
of connecting to the Internet. As a firewall, Astaro Security
Linux protects your network; the proxies filter your network
traffic, and by using the VPN functionality, your LAN can
safely be extended to subsidiaries, customers and home-offices.
DeleGate
DeleGate is a multi-purpose application level proxy
server. It mediates communication of various protocols (HTTP,
FTP, NNTP, POP, Telnet, etc.), applying cache and conversion
for mediated data, controlling access from clients and routing
toward servers. It translates protocols between clients
and servers, merging several servers into a single server
view with aliases and filtering. Born as a tiny proxy for
Gopher in March 1994, it has steadily grown into a general-purpose
proxy server. Besides proxy, DeleGate can be used as a simple
origin server for some protocols (HTTP, FTP and NNTP).

The Tarantella server Web-enables existing Linux, Unix,
and Windows applications, providing users with Java-enabled
browsers total mobility by giving them access to their existing
applications locally on their intranet or remotely over

Lotus Domino Server
Domino integrates application services such as security,
workflow and content management to optimize the platform
for rapid delivery of the collaborative Web applications.
Domino offers the industry's most comprehensive support
for Internet messaging standards, with Internet addressing,
SMTP routing and MIME content support at native level. NM
